A new rainbow initiative is taking place on Short Street.
SOUTHPORT, QLD — A new rainbow advocacy group is taking shape, launching its first gathering this weekend at The Lavender Corner, hosted at Southport Uniting Church on Short Street. It’s among a vibrant myriad of queer events happening during an action-packed Pride Month on the Gold Coast.
As the Gold Coast marches into June, other parts of the world are facing growing challenges for LGBT+ communities. Last week, the collapse of Liverpool Pride in the UK was announced, citing a lack of public support and funding. The cancellation of Gold Coast Pride Fair Day hit closer to home. The event had been held at Macintosh Park in recent years.
Gold Coast Pride announced the cancellation of its fair day on April 19th.
The new advocacy group, called The Lavender Corner, is launching with plans to support both youth and broader community members through regular events.
The group will begin hosting weekly youth meetups every Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM, alongside a broader community dinner held fortnightly starting June 14.
Organisers are actively seeking volunteers.
“You can play an important role in joining our roster of volunteers to help facilitate spaces where community can come together, connect, and appreciate how awesome they are,” the group shared.
